Resilience and Sustainability in Key Biscayne
The office of Resilience & Sustainability resides within the department of Public Works and is headed by the Chief Resilience Officer, Dr. Roland Samimy. Working in coordination with the Public Works director, the office of Resilience and Sustainability is preparing the Village and residents of Key Biscayne to adapt to the chronic stresses of climate change and sea level rise as well as recover from acute environmental shocks such as a hurricane. Adaptation efforts are geared towards upgrading critical infrastructure such as roads and the stormwater system, implementing shoreline protection strategies, hardening electrical and communications assets through undergrounding and evolving the building and zoning codes to support new solutions to climate change and sea level rise that will be protective of our barrier island community and the quality of life it supports.
Stormwater IN Key Biscayne
Ongoing maintenance is critical to the performance of the every stormwater system. Without regular maintenance, the system will eventually fail due to buildup and structural issues. Routine upkeep can prevent costly rehabilitative and restorative repairs. The Village maintains stormwater system (catch basins, manholes and stormwater pipes) at 100% per year.
Clearly marked inlet drains are visible throughout the Village in the swales bordering streets. Residents are asked to:
Help keep inlets free of clogging yard debris.
Pick up after your pet; pet waste can add harmful bacteria to our water (all the inlets drain to the bay) that can make it unsafe to swim or play in.
Check your car for leaking fluids and recycle your motor oil. Improper disposal of used oil, which includes oil leaking from cars, contributes significantly to stormwater pollution.
Do not pour any hazardous liquids into the openings, as they drain directly to the bay.
