Irela Bagué: “I’m really glad that we’re discussing stormwater issues, because as we all know: What happens on the land, ends up in the bay.
Our stormwater systems carry trash, pet waste, fertilizer, oils and fuel, yard clippings, etc., and these contribute to the increases of the nutrient pollution that ends up in our waterways and Biscayne Bay. There is no question about that.
It is one of the largest contributing factors to what we found when the [Biscayne Bay] Task Force deliberated. It was one of the biggest problems that we face today.
As we also know, the heavy rainfalls, and heavy rainfall periods that we have over the summer time particularly, and sea level rise pose unique challenges to our existing stormwater systems. “
